Fruit and Veg news

Apologies for this week: Lemons, red sweet potato, choko, cooking bananas, paw paw, cucumbers, Runner beans, and basil.

We have a great supply of some excellent beetroot with tops on coming from Rob Conlan in Huonville.

The apple season is now in full swing with Golden Dels, Gala, Pink Lady, Mutsu and Fuji all available.

We have some excellent Beurre Bosc pears coming from Chris Steenholdt in Petcheys bay.

The globe Artichokes have finally come down in price and the quality is excellent.

The Sultana grapes are all finished for the season but we do have some fantastic Crimson seedless in stock.

Pineapple is back finally and looking and tasting great.

We have some excellent melons available including some fantastic seeded watermelon.

After all the big rains in Queensland of the past month the sweet potato crops were well nourished and now we are reaping the benefits of some amazing gold and purple sweet potato. Perfect for the roast veggies with the cooler nights we’ve been having.

For those of you who haven’t tried Scott and Nigel Grahams raspberries you’re missing out. Their raspberries are of such good repute that they have been recognized by Jamie Oliver. The Graham brothers from Glenpatrick organics are to appear in the next addition of Jamie Oliver’s magazine. Unfortunately we probably won’t even get to read it as it is published for UK readers….

The sweet corn supply has been a little sporadic but last week we finally received some and the quality was fantastic! We should have more of the same this week.

We also have some delicious blood plums from David. They came in a little under ripe last week and would have needed a few days in the fruit bowl before they were ready to eat. Once they are ripe they make for fantastic eating.

Strawberries Strawberries Strawberries! It’s been great to have such abundance. They are super delicious!

Yorktown Organics keep coming up with the goods! We have loads of cherry tomatoes, Tommy toes and eggplant.

The new season potatoes have finally arrived! We will be starting of with Dutch Creams, King Edwards, Kennebecs and Kipfler.

We have an abundance of basil coming from Bruce and Clare Jackson of Yorktown organics. The Quality is outstanding and the price is down to $3.95 for 80g bag.

Yorktown organics have released their latest product. Micro Salads – a mixture of their sprouts range packaged up in 80g bags. They are such a delicious combination.

Bonsoy is also back on the shelf in abundance.

This week also saw the return of the Pureharvest soy and rice milks. Thank you for being so patient. We had been out of stock for some weeks and desperately waiting for our pallets to arrive.

We have been unable to source the Primasoy brand of Tempeh for some weeks now and have decided to run with another brand. We will now have Tally Ho Tempeh in stock in two flavours. Natural and seasoned ready to eat.

Especially in this the United Nations Year of Natural Fibres (see here http://www.alburyenvirobags.com.au/jute2009.php) the organic movement and environmentalists should be supporting the use of natural fibre bags such as jute bags and organic cotton bags. Why is it that these natural fibre bags, and the Year of Natural Fibres, have such a low profile amongst the organic community and environmentalists?
